Project 1 Wayfinding: Ideas

For our first assignment, we've been put together in a group to use the practice of wayfinding.

Wayfinding is using various signage and landmarks in order to successfully navigate a certain space. For example: Hospitals, parking garages, tunnels all use wayfinding as a means to assist daily patrons in getting from point A to point B.

My group consisting of Kevin, Laura & Katlyn came up with the idea to help students find vending machines located throughout campus.

Our first step in coming up with our idea was to find our culture, who we wanted to help. Who better to help on a college campus than the very students that inhabit it. What do college students need? Food. What don't they have? Money...or lots of it rather. The answer? Vending machines. They offer fairly cheap options to fill a student's appetite..or at least get through their next class.

With so many vending machines on campus, some may be hidden to the average starving student on a budget. To compensate we will derive a wayfinding system in order to locate all of the vending machines on campus.

To do this we will create two maps that are located next to the campus directory and will basically be a map of the campus and will have a colored dot or icon on the building where the vending machine is located. Next, we will have signs located out in front of the buildings with the vending machines to say something along the lines of "vending machine located here". Finally, inside the buildings and located near the actual vending machines themselves we'll place a sign that says vending machine and have an arrow or similar logo pointing in the correction direction.
